Accuracy of ARRT Preliminary Test Scoring

I just received a comment on the "In the News" post asking about the accuracy of the preliminary results that the ARRT is going to be giving when graduates finish their Radiography Registry Examination. Since I only wish I had all the answers, I figured I would take my own private little survey of the students who read this blog. There is now a poll on the right-hand column of this blog for those of you who have received preliminary results to mark your results on.

I would not expect to see a variation much over 10% between the two, and here's why: If there are 20 pilot questions out of 200 that don't count toward your score, and they happen to factor those into the preliminary results that they give you on test day, that's 10%. There could be other variables as well that would make them more inaccurate. Since they're planning on adding new content to the Registry, I would expect there to be some inconsistencies at first with clarity and/or presentation of a new question or two. As an instructor myself, I know what answer I'm hoping the students will choose, but I have to write an appropriate question in order to lead the well-studied test taker to the right selection. But I am only one person, and the mighty ARRT has a huge panel of experts, test writers, many more years of experience writing tests, and the ability to implement pilot questions, so they might not even consider this an issue.

All in all, I'm excited to see what you all post on the poll. If there's a wider margin than 10%, feel free to post a comment or email me and I can add a new category to vote on within the poll. Just in case you don't know how to calculate percentages, you can... wait, your Radiography graduates, you know how to do that! :-)

  1. Hey, this topic is exactly what I was wondering all day today. I took my arrt earlier today and it gave me a preliminary score of 76. I asked the woman at the desk what that meant and she told me that sometimes the official scores can fluctuate either up or down. Now I'm pretty much going to be freaking out for the next 4 weeks. Is there any light you can shed on this?

  3. I know that any time someone takes the ARRT, there are 20 or so pilot questions - questions that may include future material that is being taken out for a "test drive." These do not count on your official score, and may cause some fluctuation in it.

Also, the preliminary scoring process itself is new, and I know that there are some new question types on the ARRT now. It could be possible, as with all new things, that there are some wrinkles in scoring methodology to iron out before its accuracy can be improved.

Other than these two reasons, I would be blindly guessing. I would be interested in hearing if the scoring system was accurate for you.

  7. I don't hold MRI registration, but I would imagine that you would also have pilot questions and the same variance for inaccuracy as the Radiography registry. I would say there is a good chance of fluctuation within a few points up or down. I hope that it is the former!

  9. Raul,
Let me know how that works out. I'm stressed because I got a Preliminary of 73 on the CT Registry today. Wish me luck and good luck to you.

  11. That 73 on the preliminary was also my scaled score. I'm not sure how they give you your scaled score without including the sample questions, but I can say that the preliminary score was accurate with my scale score. Better luck next time I guess.

  13. I noticed that all of the questions were posted mid-late last year '08. I was curious to see if the people who came close to passing the registry actually passed. What have you been seeing with the flucuations since the last posts? I know you are not in MRI, but I took the MRI registry 4/29/09 and got a preliminary of 72. I was shocked when the score came up. I wasn't aware that the ARRT had started this so it kinda threw me for a loop when it popped up.

  15. That's interesting... so far I haven't heard of any fluctuations, but I know the ARRT has expressed that you COULD see fluctuations due to pilot questions.

  18. This is an excellent example of the reason for this post... the preliminary results are supposed to include pilot questions. If you did poorly on the pilot questions, that should work in your favor when you receive the official results. However, it you answered all of the pilot questions correctly, it wouldn't help your official score at all. Unfortunately, there is no real way to know until you get your letter in the mail notifying you whether or not you passed or failed. I wish I could provide some truth-based hope for you... what you can do is log on to the ARRT and search for your name in the Registry. They tend to post newly Registered techs before they send out the letters. Good luck... and feel free to let us know if your actual score differed from your preliminary.

  20. i took my boards a week ago and my prelim score was a 75% and i just found out i still past so i would say the prelim scores are true. A lady at ARRT headquarters said in the year and a half of prelim scoring she has never seen one change at all. Also the pilot questions i was told did not effect scores at all, prelim or final. hope this helps

  28. I took the MRI registry for the first time today. I got a preliminary score of 74. Is there any hope that the real score would get bumped up to 75 due to pilot questions or for any other reason. I am beating myself up about that 74. Please someone give me a word of encouragement.

  29. Hi, I also made a 74 yesterday....did your final score go up at all??

Don't be broken hearted, this is a passing score in college. I re-took the test last week and recieved a 79 awaiting the final results. Wish me luck, even pray for me. This was the hardest exam I have ever taken. Good luck too all of you who are waiting results.

  45. If you have to retake the exam, you will probably get some similar, or maybe even some of the same questions, but it will be a different exam altogether. Each test taker gets a randomly selected batch of questions from a bank... how large the bank is, I'm not certain, but it will never be the same exact exam.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I took the ARRT exam in the end of spring semester & made a 74, & it was the same as the preliminary score. All my other classmate's scores also remained the same. I asked about that the first time and they told me it is "rounded" automatically in the computer so if you get your scores in the mail and calculate a 73.8 that would have showed up a 74 on the computer screen after the exam and as your final score. So I definitely was not expecting a fluctuation. When I took the exam again I did notice similar questions(very few though) but like you said Mister E it is a different exam all together. I passed this time & I am so glad it is over with. I recommend www.RadReviewEasy.com for anyone wanting to re-take the radiography exam. Good luck to everyone, and thank you Mister E for your blog, it's amazing.

Basically.... the scaled score seems to be "THE" score.

  54. I have never heard of this happening... is it possible that the CT registry does not have preliminary scoring yet? Perhaps one of my CT-registered readers can comment?

    ReplyDelete
  55. This is the first I have heard of this happening as well. Was it possible that you "rushed" through the end process, and skipped or overlooked that part of the test? I took my CT registry and passed in October 2008, and it gave me a score right away, but I only looked at it for a brief second, and then forgot what the score was. So, for the next week, I just kept calling the ARRT and waiting for the automatic voice messaging system to tell me I was CT registered. You can try that. Who cares about the score, as long as you pass right? I hope this helps.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Thanks Dennis... not being registered in CT myself, I was unfamiliar with how results were communicated.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Jeremy...thank you for the reply. And AWESOME JOB on this site! This was the first website I found that featured this popular topic. I took the ARRT QM registry on November 2nd and scored a 74%. I thought maybe, just maybe, it would be scaled one point higher for the official scores. But it was the same score for both (74%. I am retaking it this Tuesday though... For other prospective test takers or those who are unsure about your test scores, you can always call the ARRT 24 hours a day using the automated phone services to confirm whether or not you passed your test. When I took the CT registry in late 2008 and was unsure about my score, I found out in a matter of 4 days via the ARRT automated service that I had passed the CT registry. I kept calling them because I hastily went through the end process of the test where the test center asks you to confirm 10 different things before you "END" the test. When I got my CT score, I swore it read "80" and all I remember was rushing through the rest of it so I could get out of there and celebrate. Upon leaving, I was unsure whether or not what I saw was accurate. I think a lot of it has to do with the excitement or disappointment factor. If a test taker passes, I'm guessing he or she sees that prelim score and is so elated that they breeze through the rest of the exam. For those of us who fail, there is a huge state of shock that the rest of the post test process and surveys are just drab and all we want to do is leave. Judging from everyone's replies, the preliminary and scaled scores are identifcal, and probably 99% accurate from all the students I have spoken with (I am also a Radiology clinical instructor). And if there is someone who did not see their test score after the test, this would be the first I heard of this because even the ARRT exam specific handbooks state that a "preliminary score" will be issued immediately after the test. Whatever the case, be patient, confident, hopeful, and take your time when taking the test. If you worked hard and studied, you should be fine.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Thank you for your comments Dennis... this is great feedback. I know that the ARRT had a disclaimer when they first started providing preliminary results saying there may be a point or two difference here and there due to pilot questions, but you're right... everyone who has commented here has stated that they have all been extremely accurate.

  61. Hello Im NEW AT THIS but I took my mammography ARRT and made a 72 I was surprised beacause I really thought I made an 80 or something I had a freind that took the same test in san antonia and had the exact same questions so Im wondering if the next test would have the same exact same questions?

    ReplyDelete
  62. You should not be receiving the exact same questions... the questions come from a question bank and are randomly selected for each individual test-taker. The probability of your friend having all of the same questions, or you having all of the same exact questions again is extremely low.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I just took my ARRT test today. It gave me a prelim result of 78. I was extremely happy to read here that the prelim scores are pretty accurate. That was the hardest test that I have ever taken. I am glad that it is over, at least for another 10 years. :)

  64. Be smart my friends an easy way to know if you had passed your registry is to wait a week them go to the main arrt web site a check for your credentials you may submit your last a first name they must may show up if you pass thats all it matters I had a preliminary score of 78 at the of the test about what is the margin of error? no idea but all i know is that I passed at the first attemp what i can recommend It took just a full week studying after two years out of the enviroment of radiology I did used the Saia Rad review easy online pretty usefull tool in company of the book also recommend mosbys and you shoul succes if not you suck nothing put some effort get over it!

  65. The first time I took it my prelim scaled score matched my scaled score, which was a 73. Therefore, I had to retake. I took the test today and got a prelim scaled score of 80. Fingers crossed. Hopefully if there is a fluctuation it isn't by much.

  66. Just took my ARRT exam today. Got a 75 =( Im kinda worried but not too much, especially after reading some of the comments. What I dont seem to understand are the pilot questions. How can they give you a raw score and still have the ability to fulcuate either up or down with your score? Shouldn't the test bank automatically know which questions are the piolt questions? And if so, your prelim score should be your actual final score since they automatically calculate everything. Man im stressin'

  67. I don't know how they're calculating the preliminary score right now... when they started doing this a few years ago, I don't think anyone knew what to expect, and that was one big reason I wanted feedback on this post. I wish I could say that preliminary scores could be inaccurate, but I haven't heard from anyone yet that they were not. Keep checking the ARRT website every day to look for your name under the Registered Technologist's directory. Best of luck, and keep me posted.

  69. Yikes... I'm sorry to say that I haven't heard of anyone's scores differing from the preliminary ones just yet. Of course, most people who do not pass are reluctant to let me know (especially on the blog). It's always possible that the score will be adjusted... Was it your first attempt?

    ReplyDelete
  70. Yes this was my first attempt. I have to pass the boards by october 1st to get into mri at school. So, I don't know if its worth me waiting for my score yet in the mail to see if it changed. Or just to retake it as soon as possible :(

    ReplyDelete
  71. Although... I'm not sure if this happens with your preliminary test scores, but I know your official results include a summary of how you scored in each section of the content specs. It might be worth the wait if you aren't sure what types of questions you scored poorly on in order to better prepare for next time (assuming you don't already have that info). Remember, you can only take it three times.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Do you know how long I would have to wait to retake them? And yes, you have a good point.. its just so stressful and I dont know where to pick up at now as I feel like I have little time.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I think you can take it as early as you can schedule it, but I'm not 100% positive. You used to only be able to take it within one year of graduating from your accredited program, but with a maximum of three attempts. You could probably find more info on retaking the exam on their website: www.arrt.org

    ReplyDelete
  75. Just take one question at a time... your training will take over once you begin your exam. If you find yourself spending too much time on one particular question, flag it and come back to it later.

Keep in mind that this topic/blog post will probably attract more individuals with borderline scores, and it's a place where there's freedom and anonymity to express concerns.

  76. I'll be taking the exam in about a month, as well after falling short with a 74 :(. Now to move on ans study. Anyone have suggestions for study reviews in local areas?

    ReplyDelete
  77. Just make sure to study everything... not just the areas you did poorly on. Those areas should have more time spent on them, but do study everything. I have seen quite a few people only study the parts they had low scores on and successfully bring those areas up, but actually lower the other areas that they did well on the first time.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I took my MRI exam yesterday (1st attempt) & also scored a 74. I find it very strange to see so many people score a 74.

I also agree that it was the most difficult test I have ever taken & since I've never failed a test in my life, I'm also humiliated.
It means taking another vacation day to take them again since the site doesn't offer evening or Saturday testing hours. All locations are 2 plus hours from me.

I learned MRI on the job and had to self study & hate the physics! I've worked in MRI for 9 years so it wasn't like I was lacking actual experience.

I studied VARIOUS material from the MIC program, to computer program discs to reading MRI books, and brushed up with some anatomy books. So I have no idea what to recommend. I didn't attend any of the Registry review classes. Does anyone feel like they would/did help?

As I finished the last question on the test, I felt I would score in the 80's range. (other than a bunch of questions that were pertaining to stuff I hadn't even heard of in any of the material I studied) & flagged the questions I wasn't sure about & pressed on. I scored a 91 on my RT test, but of course, had formal schooling in Radiography. I thought it was rather funny that I didn't have a single Larmor question, not a single one pertaining to the coordinates of the body, or the coordinates of the magnet. It was heavy duty with stuff that I didn't need a single formula that I had studied and memorized. I felt as though I was taking an Engineering test that was written in alien on at least 25 questions! I couldn't even narrow my "guess" down to two of the 4 choices, which concerned me but I guessed, flagged, & moved on so I wouldn't waste any time. I took the full alotted time reviewing my flagged questions & didn't rush thru it.

I have been studying off and on since I came back home from that very long ride from the testing center. I figure it's best to keep studying while the questions are still fresh in my mind.

According to the ARRT there is quite a bit of lag time before you can retest. 1 week for them to receive your results from the testing center, then one week for them to process them, then they only mail out the results and new applications on Weds, plus mail time. In with your non passing results is another application and they have to receive your $$ & reapplication for the next attempt and only process the applications on Weds. Then they told me to allow a week to get my new Candidate Status report processed and additional mail time before I can reschedule. So, long story short, it takes what appears to be a month before you can retake them. I was hoping to pass them before 10/1 and that just isn't going to happen.

I wish so badly that I hadn't changed a few answers when I went back to review some of my flagged questions. I may decide not to do that next time and not flag any. Does anyone have any stradegy that they feel worked better the 2nd time around?

I also have googled to find out some answers to ?'s I had no idea about on the test just in case I get any of the ones that I do remember were on there, again and there are 4 that I remember distinctly and just can't find the answers to even by googling for them! So, I guess it's just tough luck to get those questions. Has anyone else had that problem where you tried to find the answer and just couldn't?

Good Luck to all on your retest. I think you can figure your prelim results are your actual results. I would figure the computer wouldn't calculate the pilot ?'s into your score.

    1. This is so ditto from my experience. I came into MRI late, after working as an Xray tech for 28 yrs. I was cross trained and self studied for the MRI registry. Well, I received a 73 then a 74 (I was like oh yeah, I'm gonna pass this s**t) I took it for a 3rd time and got a 71..smh. half of the questions were like greek! Oh well, I doubt if I try again...way too stressful. I'm too old lol

  80. I took the CT Registry today and prelim. read 75. I am very stressed out. That test was super hard. I just about given up halfway through the test. I hope the prelim is accurate. I'm worried!

  82. How long does it usually take to get the result in the mail, from your experiences guys?

I know they say 3 weeks but I hope it does not take that long.

  87. I took CT registry on a thursday and got a 75. Checked the arrt website 1 week later after closing time and my (CT) creditials where posted. So I'm assuming my prelim is going to match my actual score. PHEW!!! glad that is over!!!

  89. Anonymous,
I felt exactly like you did after taking my MRI registry. I have taken the Radiology and CT boards, but the MRI registry did not seem to pertain to MRI. There wasn't any questions on parameters or views which surprised me. This test was nothing like I was expecting. I was very disappointed with this test. My preliminary score was a 76. I will keep my fingers crossed.

Hello to all...I've been a technologist for 7 years now and just took my vascular imaging (VI) boards. It was difficult, but I've been in the field for 5+ years. Experience comes along way in VI/CI. Any who, my preliminary results were 94 and once I received my packet from the ARRT the official results were the same. I think the pilot questions are not even scored once you submit your test at Pearson Vue. I wouldn't worry if you're right at the 75 mark. Keep it up and good luck to all.

  103. When I got my test results in the mail, they gave me a breakdown of how well I scored in each category of the content specs... did they give you anything like that on the computer when you received your preliminary score? It would help to know where you struggled.

  104. I got "section scaled score" on my result paper, but its not very clear to me.. Rad protection is 7.3, Equip operation and QC 6.5.. Image Acq 6.7.. Imaging Proc 7.7 and patient care 7.4... I am still reading the same reviewers that I used on my first exam.. you think I should change the review materials..? Thanks a lot for the advice.. ~m~

    ReplyDelete
  105. If you were scoring well with the material you currently use, then I would consider changing it up a bit... it seems to me like you should brush up on equipment operation and QC, as well as Image Acquisition. It wouldn't hurt to do a complete run though though if you have time.

  119. I just took the CI test last week. I got a score of 73. I was very disappointed with the test. I followed throught the Handbook to study. I have been working in the field for 5 years. The test focused on Electrophysiology, ICD, Ablation, Pacemakers (I do not have experience with any of those). Few questions about Cath procedures and patient care. For an instance, I thought they gave me the wrong test. I even found a question regarding film processor. 100% of the Labs nowadays are Digital. Well, I don't know if I will seat again. I guess, I will seat for the RCIS. Thank you for reading!

  123. What is the difference between the preliminary and final score for the arrt registry? The ARRT website makes it seem that a person's score could be different when reviewed by them? Any idea on this question? Thanks

  124. Just Passed the ARRT with a prelim of 90, I'm very excited! Study materials that I used were D.A Saia Radiography Prep and Radrevieweasy.com. Did not use anything else. I kept taking a 50 question practice exam daily. The ARRT is actually easier than the practice exams on Radrevieweasy.com. Hope that helps. Thanks.

  125. i took the registry in the begining of november the 6th to be exact. I used radrevieweasy.com along with the mosby and corectec. I scored a preliminary of 92 about a week and a half later i recieved my actual score of a 92. I was very nervous when i started although i put in alot of time and effort after first 10 questions everything went pretty smoothly. I thought this exam was going to be a lot harder than it actually was. I am now going to continue with MRI and CT so i will be back to post those grades

  134. Hello X-Ray Family,

My name is Dennis and I'm a Navy x-ray tech and a huge fan of this site. I'm also a former Radiology instructor. I've posted on this site before. But for all of you who are wondering about the accuracy of the preliminary score, I can attest that its 99.9% accurate. Since the ARRT began posting immediate prelim test results upon completion of the test, it's been pretty accurate. I've taken the CT, QM, and BD test this way. For CT test it was 100 identical. For QM I failed the first try with a 74 and the official scaled score came back from the ARRT with a 74. Same exact thing happened for the BD test. As a former instructor at METC we cycled through about 600 students per year and monitored their test results and sought feedback. Each test taker confirmed that their prelim score was identical with the final score (scaled score). I am the current supervisor for Naval Medical Center San Diego and during the past 2 years, 15 techs have become registered and reported identical prelim and scaled scores. I have yet to see a single instance of a prelim score changing and vice versa. I hope this helps. Don't give up if you failed. These tests are very difficult. Keep pushing!
